Porte-cochère Identity System

As Royal institutions try to build relevance in a changing world, many are updating their identities to reflect a contemporary aesthetic. This is the case for Government House, the office and official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of BC and the ceremonial home of the people of British Columbia.

The Lieutenant Governor represents the King at the provincial level in Canada and is the legal head of state in British Columbia, which means they act as the Vice-Regal representative. The Lieutenant Governor hosts special events, receptions, ceremonies and diplomatic meetings throughout the year on the grounds and inside Government House.

A brand review revealed that Government House marketing materials were dated and disconnected. They lacked a relevant, cohesive identity strategy that could work across channels, including digital and physical branding.

Government House holds a rich historical significance. Its identity is marked by a streamlined elevation illustration of the Porte-cochère, the remaining feature of the original Rattenbury/Maclure-designed Government House inaugurated in 1903. This new design elegantly captures its architectural simplicity and essence.
